Tips for optimal lighting of the kitchen island
In modern kitchens, kitchen islands are a popular design element. They create a space for casual conversation between the dining area and the kitchen, which is why lighting above the kitchen island should support both work and socializing equally.
Good conditions include:
1. Bright and brilliant task lighting for cooking and chopping
2. Easy-to-clean surface of the lights
3. An attractive, less technical design to make the area a visual focal point as well
When planning the number and position of light sources, care should be taken to ensure that no shadows are cast on the work surface. This can be easily achieved with suspended pendant lights. At the same time, the shades must not obstruct the view or be so large that you might bump into them. Small- to medium-sized pendant lights hung in a row are therefore ideal for use above a kitchen island. Linear lights with slim profiles are equally well-suited. They keep sightlines unobstructed while still providing good illumination. To ensure sufficient brightness, you can use the rule of thumb of 300 lumens per square meter when lighting the kitchen.
